This fact sheet explains the EU’s response to the housing crisis. While housing policy is primarily a national competence, the EU has a role in internal market, social, cohesion and environmental policy, and this underpins its action in this sector. The European Pillar of Social Rights and the renovation wave strategy marked early EU efforts to tackle homelessness and improve housing conditions. Housing has recently become a central EU priority, with the Commission unveiling its European affordable housing plan and Parliament adopting its resolution on the housing crisis in the EU.
