This fact sheet explains the role and duties of the European Ombudsman.The European Ombudsman conducts inquiries into cases of maladministration by European Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies. The European Ombudsman may open an inquiry on their own initiative, or on the basis of a complaint from an EU citizens or from any natural or legal person residing or having their registered office in a Member State. The European Ombudsman is elected by the European Parliament for the duration of the parliamentary term.
