The Great Conversation hosted Dominique Méda, a sociologist of work and professor at Paris Dauphine University.

Why do we work? This Great Conversation (the monthly program of The Conversation and CanalChat in partnership with the Academy of Sciences) with sociologist Dominique Méda, professor at Paris Dauphine University, reviews the multiple functions of work: a source of income, but also of identity, social recognition, structuring of time, and meaning.

Why does work continue to occupy such a central place in our lives, even though it is often associated with fatigue, frustration, or suffering? This is the paradox explored by Dominique Méda in her book_Work. Why do we work?_, reflecting on what work brings us beyond income: an identity, recognition, a place in society, but also a way to structure time and give meaning to existence.

But exactly what kind of work are we talking about? Why do certain freely chosen activities allow us to flourish, while similar tasks become tedious as soon as they are performed under constraint? Why are the most useful jobs often the least recognized? And how can we rethink work at a time when young people turn away from it, when conditions deteriorate, and when the boundaries between activity, employment, engagement, and care become increasingly blurred?
