Swiss Economy – KOF Economic Barometer: Outlook improves again

Source: KOF Economic Institute

The KOF Economic Barometer increases in July. After rising slightly above its average for the first time since the beginning of the year in the previous month, the Economic Barometer continues to remain above its medium-term average. The improved outlook for the Swiss economy is reinforced.

In July, the KOF Economic Barometer increases by 1.4 points to a level of 103.5 (after revised 102.1 in the previous month). The majority of the production side indicator bundles reflect these positive developments. The indicators for financial and insurance services, for other services, for the construction industry as well as for manufacturing all indicate an improved outlook. On the demand side, both the indicator bundles for foreign demand and for private consumption remain at nearly unchanged levels.

Within the producing industry (manufacturing and construction) the indicator bundles for the competitive situation, for profits, for the assessment of production barriers as well as for the general business situation show a favourable outlook. The indicator bundles for stockpiling of intermediate goods and for production activity, however, weaken.

Within manufacturing, the outlook for the sub-indicators for the textile industry as well as for the wood, glass, stones and earth segment is dampened, while the sub-indicators for the electrical industry and machinery and equipment manufacturing indicate positive signals.
