This fact sheet focuses on EU rail transport policy, which is geared towards the creation of a single European railway area. Three packages and a recast were adopted in the space of 10 years following the opening-up of the rail sector to competition in 2001. A fourth package, designed to complete the single European railway area, was adopted in 2016. In 2020 the European sustainable and smart mobility strategy was launched, emphasising the importance of rail within the EU Green Deal targets.
