This fact sheet explains the vital role that the EU defence industry plays in ensuring the Union’s security and strategic autonomy, and how it contributes to competitiveness and growth. It outlines the evolution of the European defence sector over the years, from a fragmented industry which has long suffered from structural weaknesses, preventing it from producing defence equipment at the necessary pace, to a progressively integrated one balancing national sovereignty and the need for cooperation at EU level. In view of increasing geopolitical tensions, the EU has put defence at the top of its agenda; it aims to strengthen the defence industry to make it more responsive, innovative, competitive and resilient.
