This fact sheet explains the EU’s common classification of territorial units for statistics, known as ‘NUTS’. It describes the three-level hierarchical system, how territorial units are defined and how their sizeis determined, and explains the process for amending the classification.It also sets out Parliament’s role in scrutinising and shaping the NUTS framework, which underpins EU regional statistics and cohesion policy (the EU’s main regional investment policy).
