Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese are set to hold a press conference, following Saturday’s leader’s meeting.

The Australian and New Zealand prime ministers met on Friday night and again on Saturday Morning in Noosa ahead of the annual talks between the leaders of the two allies.

The pair committed to being responsive in the wake of global uncertainty, and agreed to discuss a number of actions to strengthen economic security and the business environment.

On Friday night, Albanese discussed advancing the economic relationship between the two countries, in order to make it “seamless”.

He also discussed the need to work together in a “volatile world,” where a war neither of them were part of was still having an impact.

Norms such as trade being a good thing, or that globalisation brought benefits and people out of poverty, could not be taken for granted anymore, Albanese said.

“We need to work on them, and we need to work together.”

The world was at an “inflection point”, and moving from one ordered by rules to one ordered by power, Luxon said.

It was an opportunity for two countries “like us” working so closely together with other like-minded countries,” he added.

“We are in a place where we are strategically aligned, we have very good alignment on our values, and very good alignment on our interests.”

The relationship was one of family and therefore “we should never take it for granted,” Luxon said.

On Saturday morning, the pair met for a roundtable with business leaders.

The New Zealand side included BECA Group Strategic Adviser Greg Lowe and the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum Co-Chair.

Auckland Aiport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui and Spark NZ chief executive Jolie Hodson were also there.

The Australian side they included Australian National Farmers’ Federation chief executive Mike Guerin, and Ampol chief executive Matthew Halliday.

Luxon thanked them for being there despite being “very busy with day jobs”.

Albanese began by acknolwedging the presence Halliday in particular, saying it showed fuel security was an issue that impacted every part of industry.

He said he wanted to hear more from the executives what more could be done by their respective governments.

“I think it’s fair to say that we’re on the same page as leaders, and both of us want to make sure that we’re responsive, that you are in the best position to put forward practical initiatives and reforms as well.”

Luxon reinforced that the two nations could not control what happened globally – what could be controlled was building a stronger relationship that could “withstand the strongness around us.”

Both govenrments had agreed to take forward actions put forward by the forum last year to strengthen economic security and the business environment.

They included actions on supply chain vulnerabilities, doing more technological research together, and reinforcing their sovereign defence industries.

Luxon reinforced that the two nations could not control what happened globally – what could be controlled was building a stronger relationship that could “withstand the strongness around us.”

Part of that was building stronger financial security in order to provide better national security, he said.
